- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs

- 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using).
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cool in the pan before frosting (optional).
Notes
- For a cream cheese frosting, beat together 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup of softened butter, 3 cups of powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
