Ingredients
Scale
- 12 medium apples, cored and quartered (mix of varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, and Fuji)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 2 teaspoons whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon allspice berries
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 gallon water
- Optional: 1/2 cup brown sugar or maple syrup, to taste
Instructions
- Place apples, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg in a large pot or slow cooker.
- Pour water over the ingredients. If using a pot, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours. If using a slow cooker, cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
- Mash the apples with a potato masher to release more flavor.
- Strain the cider through a cheesecloth-lined colander into a clean container. Discard the solids.
- Taste and add brown sugar or maple syrup if desired.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- For a clearer cider, avoid stirring while simmering.
- Adjust spices to your preference.
- Store leftover cider in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- You can also use apple cider vinegar for a tangier flavor. Start with 1 tablespoon and adjust to taste.
