Ingredients

  • 12 medium apples, cored and quartered (mix of varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, and Fuji)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice berries
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 gallon water
  • Optional: 1/2 cup brown sugar or maple syrup, to taste

Instructions

  1. Place apples, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg in a large pot or slow cooker.
  2. Pour water over the ingredients. If using a pot, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours. If using a slow cooker, cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
  3. Mash the apples with a potato masher to release more flavor.
  4. Strain the cider through a cheesecloth-lined colander into a clean container. Discard the solids.
  5. Taste and add brown sugar or maple syrup if desired.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy!
