Description

A layered Southern classic featuring vanilla wafers, ripe bananas, and creamy pudding.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 4 cups cold milk
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 (12 ounce) package vanilla wafers
  • 56 medium ripe bananas, sliced
  • Optional garnish: additional whipped cream, crushed vanilla wafers, banana slices

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pudding: In a large bowl, whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mix and cold milk for 2 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes to thicken.
  2. Make the cream cheese mixture: In a separate large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in the sweetened condensed milk until well combined. Gently fold in half of the thawed whipped topping until no streaks remain.
  3. Combine mixtures: Gently fold the cream cheese mixture into the prepared vanilla pudding until just combined.
  4. Assemble the trifle: In a large trifle bowl (3-4 quart capacity), arrange a single layer of vanilla wafers on the bottom. Top with a layer of sliced bananas. Spread about one-third of the pudding mixture over the bananas.
  5. Repeat layers: Continue layering vanilla wafers, bananas, and pudding mixture, ending with a layer of pudding.
  6. Chill: Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the wafers to soften and the flavors to meld.
  7. Garnish and serve: Before serving, spread the remaining whipped topping over the top of the trifle. Garnish with additional crushed vanilla wafers or banana slices, if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, chill the trifle overnight.
  • Use ripe, but firm, bananas to prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Feel free to add other toppings like chopped nuts or chocolate shavings.
