- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, gently toss the blackberries with 1/4 cup of the granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of flour, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour the blackberry mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the milk and stir until just combined to form a soft dough.
- Drop spoonfuls of the dough over the blackberry mixture in the baking dish.
- Brush the tops of the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar, if desired.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend in both the filling and the topping.
- For a vegan version, omit the egg wash and use a plant-based milk and butter substitute.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before using.
