Description
This recipe creates a savory cheesesteak filling inside a garlic bread loaf. It is a hearty meal suitable for sharing.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 1 pound thinly sliced beef (such as ribeye or sirloin)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ cup beef broth
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded provolone cheese
- 1 loaf (16 ounces) Italian bread or French bread
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove vegetables from the skillet and set aside.
- Add the thinly sliced beef to the same skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
- Return the cooked onions and mushrooms to the skillet with the beef. Stir in salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Pour in beef broth and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the liquid to reduce slightly.
- In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, mozzarella cheese, and provolone cheese. Mix until well combined.
- Slice the Italian or French bread lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through. Create a pocket in the bread. Scoop out some of the soft bread from the inside to make more room for the filling.
- Spread the cheese mixture evenly inside the bread loaf.
- Spoon the beef and vegetable mixture over the cheese layer.
- In a small bowl, mix melted butter and minced garlic. Brush this garlic butter mixture over the top of the stuffed bread.
- Place the stuffed loaf on a baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving. Slice and serve warm.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
- You can prepare the beef and vegetable filling ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- If you prefer a crispier crust, broil the loaf for the last 2-3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
