- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Zest of 2 large oranges
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 12 ounces good quality dark chocolate, chopped
- Zest of 1 large orange
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, eggs, buttermilk, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Slowly add the hot water, mixing until the batter is smooth. It will be thin.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the Ganache: In a medium saucepan, heat heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat.
- Add chopped dark chocolate and orange zest to the hot cream. Let sit for 5 minutes, then whisk until smooth and glossy. Let cool to a spreadable consistency (can refrigerate for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally).
- Once cakes are completely cool, spread the chocolate orange ganache generously between the layers and over the top and sides of the cake.
- Garnish with additional orange zest or chocolate shavings, if desired.
