Description

A comforting and substantial five-layer beef casserole with classic Southern flavors, perfect for family dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup cooked mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup cooked egg noodles

Instructions

  1. Brown ground beef and chopped onion in a skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix condensed cream of mushroom soup and milk.
  4. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spread the cooked egg noodles evenly.
  5. Layer the ground beef mixture over the noodles.
  6. Spread the cream of mushroom soup mixture over the beef.
  7. Top with the cooked mashed potatoes.
  8. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the potatoes.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until heated through and cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • For a make-ahead option, assemble the casserole but do not bake. Cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from chilled.
  • You can add other vegetables like corn or peas to the beef mixture for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Ensure your mashed potatoes are firm enough to hold their shape as a layer.
