Description

A quick and simple version of traditional Irish soda bread that you can easily make at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round.
  5. Place the dough on a baking sheet and cut a cross shape into the top of the loaf.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  7. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter bread, add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the dry ingredients.
  • You can substitute the buttermilk with milk mixed with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes before using.
