- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
- Place the loaf on a baking sheet and cut a cross shape into the top of the bread.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter bread, add more sugar or some raisins.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 3/4 cups of milk.
