A simple and creamy homemade macaroni and cheese recipe.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb elbow macaroni
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups milk
- 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring, until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
- Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can use a mix of cheeses like Gruyere or Monterey Jack along with cheddar.
- If you prefer a baked mac and cheese, transfer the mixture to a baking dish, top with breadcrumbs and extra cheese, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes.
