Description

A simple and comforting shepherd’s pie recipe perfect for family meals and special occasions. This version is easy to make and sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground lamb or beef over medium heat. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and diced carrots to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the frozen peas, beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  5. Prepare the mashed potatoes: In a large bowl, mash the cooked potatoes with butter and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use lamb instead of beef.
  • Add other vegetables like corn or green beans to the meat mixture.
  • Top with shredded cheese before baking for an extra cheesy shepherd’s pie.
